The most frequently consumed vitamin and mineral supplements do not provide consistent health benefits, suggests a new study by researchers at St. John’s Hospital. Michael and the University of Toronto in Canada, reports Science Daily. On the other hand, consuming such supplements has no side effects.
Published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the research looks at existing data and studies published in English between January 2012 and October 2017. The bottom line is that multivitamins, vitamin D, calcium and vitamin C, supplements Most consumed, they do not have beneficial effects to prevent cardiovascular disease, myocardial infarction, stroke or premature death. In general, vitamin and mineral supplements are taken to add nutrients found in food. In addition, the consumption of these supplements does not present health risks.
“Few positive effects”
“We were surprised to find so few positive effects from the most consumed supplements,” said Dr. David Jenkins, study author. “Our analysis found that if you want to use multivitamins, vitamin D, calcium, or vitamin C, it doesn’t cause any harm, but there is no apparent benefit.”
The study found that only folic acid and B vitamins with folic acid can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke.
“These findings suggest that people should be aware of the supplements they are taking and make sure they match their vitamin or mineral deficiencies according to medical evidence,” said Dr. Jenkins.
The best solution: a healthy diet
The research team analyzed studies that included the effects of the following vitamins: A, B1, B2, B3 (niacin), B6, B9 (folic acid), C, D and E; and carotene; calcium; iron; zinc; magnesium; and selenium. The term “multivitamins” in this study was used to describe supplements that include most of the vitamins and minerals.
“In the absence of significant positive data, in addition to reducing the risk of stroke and heart disease due to folic acid supplementation, it is more beneficial for people to eat a healthy diet to obtain the necessary vitamins and minerals. Dr. Jenkins said “So far, all research on dietary supplements has shown us that the best solution for a healthy life is a diet that includes as few processed products as possible, including vegetables, fruits, and nuts.”
