USB 4 is expected to debut in 2021, and VESA has released the first information.
They claimed that USB 4 will be able to deliver 100% of what DisplayPort 2.0 promises. It will allow the display of content on monitors with HDR resolution of 8K at 60Hz and even 16K at 60Hz (TVs with 8K resolution have just been launched).
They had to make a few changes to achieve a data transfer rate of up to 80 Gbps, which DisplayPort 2.0 offers. USB 4 offers up to 40 Gbps, but through DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0 it can reach 80 Gbps (40 Gbps for sending and receiving, through DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0, the pins are remapped to work at 80 Gbps in one direction).
USB 4 is Thunderbolt 3 compatible and should become the universal connector, which we have been waiting for years. Bringing the world of smartphones and PCs together, and VESA promises to offer features like docking, gaming, AR / VR, connecting professional HDR displays, etc.
We may have the first smartphones and PCs to go from USB 3.2 to USB 4 in the second half of 2021 or early 2022. By the way, this year and iPhones are expected to switch to USB-C and leave the port of the lightning at the end.
