The manager of the Iași Infectious Diseases Hospital, Carmen Dorobăț, was sentenced this Friday to three years in prison with suspension in a case in which she is accused that, together with her husband, also a doctor, she received bribes from 124 students from Iasi University of Medicine and Pharmacy, to pass the exams. The decision was rendered by the Iași Court of Appeal and is final. Carmen Dorobăț has been at the forefront since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in Romania, entering daily on television stations to talk about the situation of coronavirus cases.
UPDATE 16.35 Contacted by journalists, Dorobăț did not want to clarify the possible resignation of his management of the hospital. Instead, he issued a brief statement: “I have taken note of the court’s decision, of course, with sadness. With the same sincerity I will be available to patients as before, with the same implication in these times of pandemic.”
The magistrates of the Court of Appeals confirmed the decision of the first instance, of being sentenced to 3 years with suspension, but modified his additional sentence. If the first instance had established that he was not allowed to hold any public office, now he was only prohibited from teaching in a public or private educational institution for 5 years.
The court also ordered a 4-year supervision period in the case of the manager of the Iași Infectious Diseases Hospital, according to the judgment consulted by Ziarul de Iași.
Gheorghe Dorobăţ, also a doctor, was sentenced in this case to 2 years and 3 months in prison with suspension, and the decision rendered at first instance was confirmed by the Iași Court of Appeal. The court also ordered a series of prohibitions for Carmen Dorobăț’s husband, including not holding public office.
DNA Prosecutors – The Iaşi Territorial Service sued, in March 2015, the manager of the Iaşi Infectious Diseases Hospital, Carmen Dorobăţ, and her husband, Gheorghe Dorobăţ, after they allegedly accepted a bribe of one hundred euros each. 124 students from the Faculty of Dentistry. According to the accusation prepared by the DNA prosecutors, in June-July 2014, Carmen Dorobăţ would have received, directly, the amount of 5,700 euros from 57 second-year students of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy. (UMF) of Iaşi.
In turn, Gheorghe Dorobăţ, as head of the Department of General Anesthesia at UMF Iaşi and head of the ATI department of the “Nicolae Oblu” Neurosurgery Hospital in Iaşi, would have received, between January 6 and 30, the amount of 6,700 euros from 67 third-year students of the Faculty of Dentistry.
