Seven people vaccinated with the anti-COVID-19 serum developed by AstraZeneca have died of blood clots in the UK, out of a total of 30 cases identified so far, the British Medicines and Medicines Regulation Agency (MHRA) said on Saturday, according to AFP and Agerpres.
The regulatory agency said it has so far received reports of 22 cases of cerebral venous thrombosis and another eight cases of thrombosis associated with a platelet deficiency, out of a total of 18.1 million doses administered.
“Our in-depth analysis of these reports continues,” MHRA Director June Raine said in a statement, adding that no similar cases have been reported with the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine.
Releasing this Thursday an opinion on the side effects of vaccines administered in the country, the MHRA stressed that “the risk of formation of this type of blood clots is very low.”
More generally, “the number and nature of side effects reported so far are not uncommon compared to other commonly used vaccines,” the regulatory agency added.
The UK has one of the most advanced vaccination campaigns in the world, with more than 31.3 million first doses and around five million booster doses administered since the beginning of December.
