The match between the Romanian couple formed by Andreea Mitu and Patricia Ţig and the couple Madison Brengle (USA) and Iana Sizikova (Russia), from the first round of the Roland Garros doubles event, is in the sights of the French justice.

French courts have already opened an investigation into suspicions that the match was rigged.

An investigation into “organized fraud” and “active and passive sports corruption” was opened on October 1 in connection with suspected cheating at a Roland Garros match, the Paris prosecutor’s office said Tuesday, writes Agerpres.

According to Die Welt and L’Equipe, these suspicions point to the match won on September 30 by Andreea Mitu and Patricia Ţig against Madison Brengle / Iana Sizikova, 7-6 (10-8), 6-4.

More precisely, it is the fifth match of the second set, won to zero by the two Romanians, after two double errors committed in the service of 25-year-old Sizikova and 89th in the world in doubles.

The police also opened this investigation following statements from various bookmakers, according to which colossal sums were allegedly wagered during this match. Bookmakers say the unusually high number of bets placed on the event made them think something might be “rotten.”

What followed during the tennis match “confirms” the bookies’ fears.

A suspicious evolution of the Russian player was registered in the fifth round of the second set. In that match, Sizikova made two double errors and missed a ball that seems accessible to return. The Romanians got the break to zero and took a 3-2 lead.

L’Equipe writes that in different countries, significant sums were wagered on the Romanian team winning this game, at various bookmakers in Paris.

The investigations were entrusted to the Central Service for Racing and Games (SCCJ), the prosecution said.
