Like most 12-year-olds, Ayaan and Mickey Naqvi love Christmas traditions, like making candy and wrapping gifts. But most of all, they like to decorate the tree with familiar ornaments, writes CNN, quoted by Mediafax.
One day when the two brothers from Connecticut were hanging the ornaments, one fell off and broke. Thus the “light bulb” was lit and “Anchor” was born, a safer way to hang decorations.
Anchor has a device that securely holds the ornaments to the tree, rather than hanging them in a conventional way. Ayaan tried Anchor on a school project last year, and when the booth was full, he knew he and his brother had done a great job.
The invention quickly became a business. “My brother and I worked on product design, patenting, creating a website, calculating profit margins and conducting our own market analysis,” Ayaan told CNN.
After selling for more than $ 1,000 in the first six hours of a local holiday fair last year, the boys decided to present their product on a larger scale. Within months, Good Morning America unveiled the product. So is QVC, where it was sold twice.
In just one year, Ayaan and Mickey have earned more than $ 250,000 and donated, and will continue to donate, 10% of their profits to animal shelters.
Although the boys are enjoying success, 2020 has not been an easy year to start a new business. “Starting a new business just three months before the crisis and then all of a sudden quarantine and homeschooling,” Ayaan says. “We take small steps every day and are so amazed at all the positive responses from the project!” He added.
