Political scientist Vladimir Tismaneanu apologizes for the racist meme he shared on Facebook. His clarifications come after representatives of the Roma community harshly criticized the publication with “the Țăndărei brambles”, the CNCD announced that it was self-evaluating and the “Elie Wiesel” institute, as it described the gesture as “racism in the cultural elite ”
Tismăneanu posted on Facebook on Friday an image with a racist tone, in which some shouts appear with the message “ăndărei airport, all flights were canceled”. Later, he deleted the post. The political scientist apologized for receiving the image in the messenger and “wanted it to be fun.” “I had not disclosed its racist implications. I do not live in Romania, I do not know many details,” he said.

On Saturday night, Vladimir Tismaneanu returned with apologies on Facebook, asking for “final apology, final apology for the racist, inappropriate, and most important and painful meme I posted yesterday.”
- “Although I didn’t think deeply about the racist implications at the moment, I should have.” As soon as I realized I had removed it (in a few minutes). It is not an excuse for not living in Romania, I should have done more research and admit that this was not fun, especially before posting on a public forum. There is no excuse. I will handle it better in the future, I will learn from it. I know that some may not accept these excuses or believe what they say and that is their right. I know there are no magic words to repair the pain I caused. With that said, I am open to working with those working in the Roma community on how to combat hatred, bigotry and intolerance. Also, I understand that I don’t owe any of this. As I said, I will learn from this mistake and I hope that the reaction has shown others that such jokes are not funny and painful for many. For me, I intend to continue reflecting on Easter. On Monday I return to my usual activities. Thank you to those who wrote to defend my reputation, as well as to those who were critics in good faith, “he wrote on Facebook.
CNCD chief Asztalos Csaba announced on Facebook on Saturday that the institution will self-certify in the event of publishing to Vladimir Tismăneanu an image in which some shouts appear with the message “Țăndărei airport, all flights have been canceled.” Furthermore, the Elie Wiesel Institute has reacted, calling Tismăneanu’s publication “racism in the cultural elite.”
