Three reasons why HMD Nokia is on a sustained decline in the smartphone market: Gadget.ro – Hi-Tech Lifestyle

Mobile phones

In the first three months of 2020, HMD Nokia delivered 1.7 million smartphones, a decrease of 45% compared to the first three months of 2019.

We also have a chart with Nokia HMD sales from the first quarter of 2017 to the first quarter of 2020.

2018 was a good year, more than 4 million delivered every quarter. They fluctuated in 2019, with a peak in the second quarter and a significant decrease during the holidays. The downward trend continued in the first quarter of 2020.

We have selected three reasons for this situation:

1. Mobile phones with a modest price / specification ratio;

I saw their smartphones at IFA Berlin 2019 and they were not bad at all, they only positioned them at too high prices and that made them unattractive in the eyes of the interesting public. To get ahead, you need a combination of elements: nice design, space to do honorably, attractive price.

2. Strong competition;

The smartphone market has entered a downward slope, we no longer have the boom of a few years ago. The client begins to take some brands as a reference, Samsung did not stay on the sidelines and came with the A series from 6 – 700 lei, Huawei has the Lite series, Xiaomi gets ahead with its Redmi, through India it is Realme area from Oppo games, etc. Hence the impossibility of Motorola or HMD with Nokia to compete with high-profile players.

3. They did not approach the premium segment or present proposals doubtful;

Here is an example: Nokia 9 PureView. It was supposed to be a real camera phone, and apart from the number of sensors in the camera it didn’t stand out at all, it was a glitch in many ways. Nokia 8, on the other hand, was the direction they had to go, another positive example from the past was Nokia 7 Plus.

Unfortunately, they brought in the Nokia 9 PureView and stopped. They didn’t come with any other mid-range to premium area phones. They focused on cheap products, feature phones, etc., and the results of that strategy are now being considered.

What does Nokia aka HMD test?

  • Delivering a clean Android phone with timely software updates is not enough;
  • You don’t have to stop the low-cost segment of the mobile phone maker.

On the other hand, I think Foxconn or the companies that invested in HMD expected other results, some due to the well-known brand that they started and decided to stop investing in product development.
