Three gendarmes were shot dead and a fourth wounded from Tuesday night to Wednesday in an isolated area in central France while responding to a call for domestic violence.
The soldiers were shot by a 48-year-old man after they came to the aid of a woman who had taken refuge on the roof of a house near the town of Saint-Just in the Clermont-Ferrand region.
Shortly after midnight, two of the gendarmes were attacked by gunfire as they tried to approach the house where the threatened woman had taken refuge. One of them died from his injuries and the other, wounded in the leg, was taken to the fire brigade hospital.
Later, the man set fire to his house and fired again at the gendarmes present at the scene, causing two more casualties among the military, the Clermont-Ferrand prosecutor’s office confirmed to AFP, Agerpres reports. The woman is currently safe, the prosecutor’s office said.
A source close to the investigation said that at least seven members of the special forces of the GIGN (elite unit of the national gendarmerie) are at the scene and that they intervene “with the utmost caution in the face of danger to the individual.
The perpetrator of the shots is said to have been known for child custody issues.
