The new compact model would roll off the assembly line of Tesla’s first plant in Europe. Gigafactory is currently under construction near Berlin. The Model 3 reserved for customers from the “Old Continent” will also be built. If everything goes according to plan, which is hard to believe in Tesla’s case, the plant should start production in July of next year.

Elon Musk hinted at a conference in Germany that the American manufacturer is working on an affordable hatchback, reserved exclusively for the European market. It would be a rival for Volkswagen ID.3, but also for Nissan LEAF.

In the German market, before counting state subsidies, the Volkswagen ID.3 part of the 34,113 euros. So the goal of the Americans is for the future hatchback to be priced similarly or even lower than the electric car produced by the Germans. Elon Musk spotted the German model during a meeting with Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess three months ago.

Tesla boss Elon Musk wants a cheaper range

“We will not be successful unless we also produce more affordable cars. What bothers me the most right now is the fact that our cars are not affordable enough. We need to solve this problem,” Musk said, quoted by Bloomberg.

Tesla’s future hatchback will be based on the Model 3 sedan. It is not known exactly when it will go into production. Tesla must first organize the entry into series production of the models already officially revealed: the Tesla truck, the Roadster supercar and the Cybertruck station wagon.

The international press speculates on the name of the future model. To advertise its positioning under the Model 3, the hatchback should be called the Model 2.

The cheapest Tesla can be purchased through the Scrap Plus Program, although the manufacturer still does not have a representative office in our country.
