They will be a target if Russia attacks Romania

Defensive missile systems installed in our country will become Russia’s targets in the hypothetical case of an attack on Romania, writes the Russian press, citing an expert on international relations.

The Russian press writes about the Patriot missiles that arrived in Romania last week and recalls that they will be complementary to the Deveselu anti-missile shield, installed in 2015. Romania and other countries in Southeast Europe link this process of retrofitting with American technology to a possible threat that may arise on the eastern flank of the NATO alliance, writes the Izvestia newspaper, acquired by the Russian news agency TASS.

In addition to the provision of new military equipment, the United States could increase its military presence with troops stationed in this area, the newspaper also wrote.

Konstantin Bogdanov, a researcher at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations at the Russian Academy of Sciences, says that the deployment of Patriot missile systems in Romania and Poland is not surprising.

“Both countries are reliable bases, where NATO troops will be deployed in the event of a threat,” Bogdanov told Izvestia.

In political terms, the deployment of defensive systems, which does not undermine strategic stability, does not create problems, Bogdanov added.

“The range of these missiles in peacetime does not pose any difficulties for the Russian army, including the troops in Crimea. Without a doubt, however, these systems will be considered targets in case of planning hypothetical operations in Romania,” the expert also showed Russian.

Another expert, Ilya Kramnik of the Russian Council for International Affairs, says Moscow will likely respond to the positioning of Patriot missiles in Romania.

“Such things cannot be ignored. Probably more attention will be paid to the air capabilities of the Black Sea Fleet and the Southern Army Division, in the sense of having defensive systems. There are certain weapons, for example anti-radar missiles. capable of neutralizing missile and radar systems, ”Kramnik specified, according to Izvestia.

The first Patriot missiles reached Romania

Romania received the newest Patriot configuration, currently used by the US military. The cost of acquiring the first Patriot system amounts to US $ 910.1 million, VAT included. The total value of the contract is 3.9 billion euros.

This first Patriot missile system (out of a total of seven) will be equipped by the Romanian Air Force and will be operational in 2021, once the training program is completed.

A Patriot missile “system” contains, in addition to radars, command and control systems, four anti-aircraft missile launchers or anti-missile interceptors. Each of these launchers contains 4 or 12 canisters containing anti-aircraft missiles and ballistic interceptors.
