The international team of a dozen scientists in various fields of expertise is on a mission to identify the origins of the virus and how it was transmitted to humans. The team has not yet been able to travel to China, where the new coronavirus was first detected in late 2019.
The WHO said last week that it hoped the international team, which conducts regular videoconferences with Chinese experts, “could be held as soon as possible” on the ground, but so far it has not moved once.
“The position of the WHO has been very clear. We will start studying from Wuhan and we will build on the results obtained to determine if there are other clues to explore, ”explained Tedros.
“We will not stop looking for the truth about the origin of the virus, but we will rely on science,” he said.
