The viral story of the journalist who fell in love with America’s most hated criminal – Showbiz

“When you are in love, you are in love.” When you’re in love, you’re in love, even if the person you lost your mind over is Martin Shkreli, write AFP and Business Insider.

Bloomberg journalist Christie Smythe resigned from the US publication and divorced her husband to have a love affair with the disgraced “Pharma Bro”, Shkreli serving about half of the 7 prison sentences received for fraud.

The journalist revealed her obsession with the former pharmaceutical chief executive in an interview with Elle magazine.

“I’m happy to be here. I feel like I have a purpose,” Smythe told reporter Stephanie Clifford.

Smythe met Shkreli while writing for Bloomberg News about economic crime. She was the one who revealed in 2015 that Shkreli is being investigated by federal authorities for fraud.

In the same year, in another issue, Shkreli became famous after raising the price of a drug used to treat HIV overnight from $ 13.75 to $ 750 per tablet.

Smythe wrote regularly about Shkreli’s actions and approached him to write detailed material on the pharmaceutical director. He never wrote that article again, but his experience changed his life.

In love with him, the journalist divorced her husband (at Shkreli’s suggestion) and froze her eggs so she could start a family as soon as “Pharma Bro” gets out of jail (not before 2023).

Smythe speaks in an interview with Elle about maintaining a relationship with Shkreli while he is incarcerated. He reported that he spent hours traveling to and from prison and that he printed internet memes with Shkreli on glossy paper.

The journalist said she kissed the former CEO for the first time while he was in prison, the romantic moment that took place in a guest room that smelled like fried chicken.

But the relationship may have caused problems for Shkreli. The sentencing judge cited the emails between him and Smythe as evidence that the man has no remorse for his actions, which Shkreli says has led to a harsher sentence, according to Smythe.

In the years after Pharma Bro’s conviction, Smythe often defended him on Twitter and resigned from Bloomberg after management told him he had violated the organization’s ethical rules.

“Ms. Smythe’s conduct toward Mr. Shkreli is inconsistent with the expectations of a Bloomberg reporter,” an Elle spokeswoman told him.

Smythe took to Twitter again to defend his relationship with Shkreli after the interview was published in Elle magazine.

When Shkreli was contacted by journalists from the magazine to comment on the story, he only stated that:

“Mr. Shkreli wishes Ms. Smythe the best of luck in her future endeavors.”

Smythe said that he would wait for his release from prison.
