The first COVID-19 vaccines could be administered in Romania this year, between Christmas and New Years, Valeriu Gheorghiță, coordinator of the national vaccination campaign, told Digi24.
„If the authorization is issued on December 23, the first doses of the vaccine will be delivered in Romania between Christmas and the New Year and we will be able to actually start the vaccination activity planned for first of all, the medical staff of the front-line hospitals, ”Valeriu Gheorghiță told Digi24.
This will happen immediately after delivery, right between Christmas and New Years, a day or two after the vaccines arrive in the country, he adds.
Gheorghiță says that BioNTech and Pfizer will send to Romania an initial installment of up to 10,000 doses of vaccines, with which 5,000 hospital employees can be vaccinated, since two doses are needed for immunization.
„It is a symbolic tranche, so to speak, that will be distributed on the same day in the 27 EU member states, which are part of the EC contract, but from January the other doses will be delivered, both in December and in the from January. By January, we should receive, according to the new delivery schedule, about 600,000 doses, enough to vaccinate about 300,000 people. Subsequently, this amount increases from month to month, “said Gheorghiță.
