The vaccination passport, the document that certifies that its holder was vaccinated against COVID-19, was banned in the US state of Florida in the name of respect for “individual freedoms,” announced this Friday the Republican governor of this very touristy state , reports AFP. according to Agerpres.
Governor Ron DeSantis has prohibited state administrative services from issuing vaccination passports or any type of document that shows that a person has been vaccinated against COVID-19.
At the same time, the order prevents Florida companies from asking customers for this type of vaccination passport or proof of immunization against the virus.
According to DeSantis, a close associate of former President Donald Trump, the vaccination passport limits individual freedoms and threatens medical confidentiality.
“It is totally unacceptable for a government or the private sector to ask you to provide proof of vaccination just to participate in social life,” DeSantis said.
“Do you want to go to the movies? Do you have to show that? No. Do you want to go see a game? No. Do you want to go to an amusement park? No. We don’t agree with that,” the governor continued.
COVID passport controversy
The announcement comes after an article was published in the Washington Post that reported that the Biden administration is working to implement government standards for a future vaccination passport to accompany the lifting of health restrictions in the United States.
The creation of a health passport is also being discussed at the EU level, which would like to launch this type of initiative this summer to travel within the Union.
In turn, China announced in early March a digital “health certificate” for Chinese who want to travel abroad.
More than six million people have been vaccinated with the first dose of COVID-19 in Florida, a state with a population of approximately 22 million.
Starting Monday, all adults who want to get vaccinated will be eligible without a prescription.
