The UK has become the first country in the world to approve the widespread use of the COVID vaccine developed by Pfizer / BioNTech.

British regulator MHRA says the vaccine, which offers up to 95% protection against COVID-19, is safe and immunizations could start in a few days for people in high-priority groups, Mediafax reports.

Britain has already ordered 40 million doses, enough to vaccinate 20 million people.

About 10 million doses should be available soon, with the first units arriving in the UK in the next few days.

This is the fastest moving vaccine from concept to reality, taking just 10 months to go through the same development steps that normally take a decade.

Although vaccination can begin, people must remain vigilant and follow rules to stop the spread, experts say.

On Tuesday, the European Medicines Agency announced that the vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech will receive the green light for sale no later than December 29.
