Hip-hop star MF Doom died at the age of 49, his family confirmed on social media, on the last day of 2020.

The London-born musician, whose real name is Daniel Dumile, was known for his sour lyrics and the mask he wore and never took off in public. On Thursday, in a post on the rapper’s Instagram account, his wife, Jasmine, confirmed that he died on October 31, according to BBC News.

Several well-known artists paid tribute to MF Doom through messages posted online.

In a message to the rapper, his wife paid tribute “The best husband, father, teacher, student, business partner, boyfriend and friend you could ask for.”

MF Doom was born in London, but moved to New York as a child. As a teenager he was part of the hip-hop group KMD, but after losing his younger brother and bandmate, he withdrew from music and was “almost homeless,” as he put it.

In 1997, he returned to the Manhattan stage with his face covered. Subsequently, he hid his face for the rest of his career with a mask of the character Doctor Doom created by Marvel.

His debut as MF Doom took place in 1999, after which his career increased steadily.

In addition to six solo albums, he has produced a multitude of compilations, collaborations, and instrumental albums. In 2004, one of his albums entered the US charts and over time he had collaborations with famous bands and artists.
