The strange case of a patient with Hodgkin’s lymphoma who recovered from coronavirus.
The British Journal of Haemathology published the clinical case of a 61-year-old man who developed an antitumor response after contracting coronavirus. The patient, who had symptoms of Hodgkin lymphoma, shocked the scientific community by the “strange case”.
The man was on hemodialysis for secondary end-stage renal disease after a failed kidney transplant. Shortly after suffering progressive weight loss and palpable masses in various areas of the body, he was referred to a specialist where he was diagnosed with stage III Hodgkin lymphoma.
A short time later, the patient was admitted to the intensive care unit, presenting symptoms related to the coronavirus. He was hospitalized with shortness of breath and was eventually diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2.
He was hospitalized for 11 days, during which time he was not given corticosteroids or immunochemotherapy. After four months, the patient returned to the medical center for a lymphoma examination, where doctors were able to observe a radical decrease in the size of the lymph nodes.
In the article, the doctors said that the SARS-CoV-2 infection “triggered an antitumor immune response.” According to the study, inflammatory cytokines produced in response to infection could have activated specific T cells with tumor antigens and natural killer cells against the tumor, writes BBC WORLD.
