The smartphone market in the first 3 months of 2020: Samsung, Huawei and Apple in the top positions: Gadget.ro – Hi-Tech Lifestyle

The data for the first quarter of 2020 was provided by Counterpoint Research and Canalys. The data is similar, sales fell 13% and less than 300 million units delivered (I expect the second quarter of 2020 to come with even more modest values).

Canalys;

  1. Samsung: 59.6 million units, 17% decrease compared to the same period in 2019;
  2. Huawei: 49 million units, the same percentage decrease as Samsung (honestly, I think it is a good result, in the context in which the pandemic began in China and was captured the entire quarter + the fact that they do not have GSM phones in Europe affects its sales in the Mate and P series);
  3. Apple: 37.1 million units, 8% less (less than positions 1 and 2);
  4. Xiaomi: 9% increase, in the given context, I would say that we have a good result. However, from 30.2 million units and up to 49 or 59.6 million units delivered by Huawei and Samsung, I would say that they are seriously laid off;
  5. Live: 24.2 million units, a more modest growth than Xiaomi.

The other players in the market are even more affected by – 21%.

Counterpoint investigation;

Counterpoint Research gives us an overview of the top 10 smartphone manufacturers.

  1. Samsung: 59 million units;
  2. Huawei: 49 million units;
  3. Apple – 40 million units;
  4. Xiaomi – 29.7 million units;
  5. Oppo – 22.3 million units;
  6. Live – 21.6 million units;
  7. Realme – 8.2 million units;
  8. Lenovo – 6 million units;
  9. LG – 5 million units;
  10. Tecno – 4.6 million units.

Tecno is a Chinese manufacturer with a special presence in Africa. We may see them strengthen in the future, but I suppose that when African countries develop stronger, they will change to big brands (Samsung, Apple, etc.).

If we add the brands of the BBK group: Oppo + Vivo + Realme = 51 million units + OnePlus sales and we can say that we have a second place, after Samsung and a little ahead of Huawei.

What do I hope will happen in the second quarter of 2020?

  • smartphone sales will drop below 250 million units;
  • Huawei will lose second place to Apple, which could represent several million good units through the iPhone SE 2;
  • Xiaomi will be ahead of Huawei in terms of the number of units delivered (Huawei will actually be in 4th place, although it can gain popularity in the domestic market, where the GMS suite does not matter);
  • BBK marks to maintain previous positions;
  • other players in the industry to continue their decline even faster.
