A team of marine biologists found, at a depth of 900 meters, near the California coast, a rare species of purple octopus, which appears to come from cartoons, reports sciencealert.com.
The cephalopod, Rossia pacifica, looks more like cuttlefish than squid or octopus, according to biologists.
Also known as the “dumpling” or “tail tail” octopus, the creature has a rounder body than sepia and is boneless. Both Rossia pacifica and squids have the same number of tentacles: eight with suckers and two long tentacles with which they capture their prey, writes news.ro.
Rossia Pacifica lives longer on the ocean floor and can hide in the sand, while producing a “blanket” of mucus and leaving only her eyes uncovered to identify her prey.
Octopuses of Rossia pacifica have been found in the North Pacific Ocean, from Japan to southern California. Specialists from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute found them at a depth of 1,300 meters, but also at 300 meters.
The team from the research ship Nautilus found another octopus in 2014.
