The racism scandal in which the Romanian referee Sebastian Colțescu is involved has taken on a diplomatic scale. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reacted on Twitter Tuesday night after the referee was accused of making a racist comment in the Champions League match between PSG and Istanbul Bașakșehir. The Turkish Foreign Minister, as well as the sports ministers of Turkey and France, where the position is held by a former Romanian athlete, condemned such behavior.

Romanian Sports Minister Ionuț Stroe also reacted. He apologized on behalf of Romanian sports and said that racism could not be tolerated.

Sebastian Colțescu apologized in a message posted on his Twitter account. “In such a context, sometimes people do not express themselves correctly and can be misinterpreted,” he added.
