The Prime Minister of Romania, Ludovic Orban, announced this Thursday that he will close the Obor Square in Bucharest, after the entry into force of the measures to combat the pandemic. The Mayor of Sector 2, Radu Mihaiu, claims that he has found a solution for the market traders: he will establish an open-air market.

“Today the Obor hummed. After the Prime Minister’s statement last night, people do not understand what will happen to this market: will they be able to buy food from here or not? I wish I could reassure them and tell them how we will continue, but we need more answers from the Government .
Today I went to talk to the people there, those who come to buy what they need, those who sell at the stalls and those who are in the stores on the upper floors. I found a lot of concern. However, everyone understands that we are going through a difficult period and that it will take time to get out of this crisis.
We discuss with them what options we have. People still need to buy food and cannot understand why it would be better for everyone to go to stores that would continue to operate. Growers worry that their fall harvest will be ruined. Those selling dairy, meat, or other perishable goods are desperate for all of their products to end up in the trash if their lock is placed on the door shortly.
Sector 2 was known as the commercial sector. And Obor is the center and heart of our community.
Although the current wave of the pandemic is much more violent and dangerous, we need to find a solution to get food to the table. A variant that we are willing to follow would be for the stalls to move outside under the tents, and for the stores on the first and second floors to remain open with a limited and strictly respected circuit.
Today, I gathered all the addresses of the City Council that can help in this regard. We ask the Local Police to provide enough equipment to ensure that social distance measures are respected in Plaza Obor. We have agreed with those who manage the markets to prepare the installation of the tents and the reorganization of the stalls. I convinced the stall traders to hold out until the cold so they could continue.
We are going through difficult times. We all need to make an effort. And the market, in one way or another, must continue its activity, to provide people with food without which they cannot live.
Obor and Cremenita Square will be able to move their activity outdoors immediately. We also look for variants for Gemini, Delfinului, but the surrounding space is not very cute. I keep you posted, ”said Sector 2 Mayor Radu Mihaiu on his Facebook page.
