The perpetrators of the bomb attack on two ATMs in Otopeni had their faces covered with surgical masks and were wearing green capes when they committed the attack. The researchers also determined the method used to blow up the ATMs: the so-called “pizza slide”, that is, the introduction of explosive material through the slot of the ATM and allowing the perpetrator to move away before the explosion.
“My opinion is that they had some of these masks used by the vast majority of the population, for medical use,” Cristian Gheorghe, chief deputy commissioner of the Directorate of Criminal Investigation, said at a press conference.
The police already have suspects in this case and are awaiting the results of the forensic examination to see what explosive substances were used.
However, Gheorghe says that this method of theft is not used often in Romania.
“At the national level, robberies or robberies at ATMs with explosives are not a phenomenon. Since the beginning of the year we have 5 cases and yesterday 6. We cannot say that it could create a problem at some point. There are 5 cases in 9 months and in these five cases the police identified and arrested the perpetrators. The mode of operation is different, some were with solid explosives, like yesterday, some were with gas ”, he specified.
According to Gheorghe, the explosive device used is not military, but handmade.
“It was pretty well done. It’s a pretty common mode of operation. It’s called pizza slide in specialized language. You can’t really mistake it,” he said.
The officer said it has not yet been established whether the burning car discovered yesterday had something to do with the Otopeni robbery.
