Patriarch Irineu of the Serbian Orthodox Church has died of the new coronavirus infection, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced on Friday on his official Instagram account, reports Agerpres, quoting Reuters.
“It was an honor to meet you. People like His Beatitude never leave,” Vucic wrote under a black and white photograph of the patriarch.
Serbian patriarch Irenaeus, 90, a conservative who also wields great political influence, tested positive for the new coronavirus on November 4 and has since been admitted to a military hospital in Belgrade.
A few days earlier, Patriarch Irenaeus held a religious service after the death of the Metropolitan of Montenegro, in the presence of a crowd.
The faithful turned out in great numbers to the service, did not wear a protective mask and kissed the body of Metropolitan Amfilohije Radovic.
The Metropolitan of Montenegro to repeatedly avoided wearing a mask and reclaimed that pilgrimages are “God’s vaccine.”
