The Spanish-language press reported an outbreak of infection on Monday at the General Bernardo O’Higgins Riquelme research base. 36 cases were identified among those stationed, 26 of them are Chilean soldiers and another 10 are employees who take care of the maintenance of the base.
The Chilean army said in a statement that “thanks to an early preventive action” its military personnel could be examined, which demonstrated the infection by SARS-CoV-2 in the 36 people but also in three other members of the crew of a ship . support when returning from a mission in Antarctica.
The 36 infected people were evacuated to the Chilean city of Punta Arenas and are now in solitary confinement.
