About 20 buildings collapsed in the Turkish city of Izmir after a strong earthquake in the Aegean Sea on Friday, felt in Turkey and Greece.
According to the Turkish authorities, cited by CNN Turk, several people were pulled out from under the rubble, injured. Video images of a person with blood on their face, carried in the arms of several people, appeared on Twitter, as the crowd cheered.
Four people died and 120 were injured in Izmir.
A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the Aegean Sea near Samos, Greece on Friday, according to the United States Institute of Geophysics (USGS). The earthquake occurred at a depth of only 10 kilometers. According to the Greek and Turkish authorities, the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.7.
The earthquake was felt strongly in areas of Turkey and Greece.
Several buildings in the Turkish city of Izmir collapsed, Turkish Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu was quoted as saying by the daily Hurriyet. Tens of thousands of people took to the streets immediately after the earthquake.
In Greece, damage to some buildings was reported on the islands of Samos and Chios and a small tsunami occurred immediately after the earthquake.
