Romania has submitted 109 requests to the courts of different states, in relation to the extradition of people wanted by the Romanian judiciary, announced on Tuesday the Minister of Justice, who presented the current situation in the cases of Mario Gino Iorgulescu, Gabriel Popoviciu, Alexander Adamescu, Dragos Savulescu, Alina Bica.
“Since the last update of the files (September 21, 2020), a number of 6,513 works have been processed at the department level, of which 122 on extradition matters. Currently, there are 109 active extradition cases pending (requests in which Romania is the requesting state) ”, declared the Minister of Justice, quoted by Agerpres.
The Minister of Justice then presented the status of some requests for extradition from abroad of some important people, convicted or criminally investigated by the Romanian courts.
Mario Gino Iorgulescu, son of Gino Iorgulescu (president of the Professional Football League), has a European arrest warrant issued by the Bucharest Court and was located in Italy. The procedure is carried out directly between the Romanian and Italian courts. The ministry has no information on the status of the procedure.
The businessman Dragoş Săvulescu, a former financier of the Dinamo club, has a sentence of 5 years and 6 months in prison in the case of illegal restitution of beaches in Constanza. The Bucharest Court of Appeal, based in Italy, issued a European arrest warrant on his behalf.
The Justice Minister said that the Italian authorities (Naples Court of Appeal) rejected the execution of the European arrest warrant, recognized the sentence handed down by the Romanian court and ordered the execution of the sentence in Italy. At the same time, the Italian court ordered the suspension of the execution of the sentence.
“I do not hide my disappointment at such a verdict. In general, I am very reluctant to comment on cases and solutions ruled in court for reasons that I do not want to develop, but Italy is a little further away. I doubt that a statement by me can be interpreted as pressure on the Italian judiciary, but the Italian Minister of Justice can listen to it. We are extremely disappointed by such a release of the extradition request submitted by the Bucharest Court of Appeal, “said the Minister of Justice.
Delay attempts
In the case of the employer Gabriel Puiu Popoviciu, definitively sentenced to 7 years in prison in the “Băneasa” case, a British court ordered his surrender on July 12, 2019. Popoviciu appealed, which was declared admissible.
The minister said that the Ministry of Justice received on Tuesday an information from the prosecutors representing Romania in the procedure for the execution of the European arrest warrant against Popoviciu, and it is most likely that the appeal hearings (for 5 days in principle ) start in March. 2021.
As for the employer Alexander adamescu, The Bucharest Court of Appeal issued on June 6, 2016 an arrest warrant in his name, which was in Great Britain.
The British court ordered the surrender of Alexander Adamescu and the businessman’s appeal was rejected. Adamescu subsequently requested permission to pose a question to the Supreme Court of Great Britain and it cannot be delivered until this request is resolved.
“It’s more of a delay, from our perspective, but it doesn’t seem to have much of a chance,” the justice minister said.
