The new Minister of the Environment, Tánczos Barna, demands that the date of February 1 be respected, assumed as the final deadline for the start-up of the new SUMAL, the electronic system for monitoring the traceability of wood. He says that this term “is not negotiable” and that the new SUMAL has been postponed too many times, and any further postponement would produce imbalances in the forestry sector.

The new system would allow the monitoring, in real time, by GPS coordinates, of any transport of wood from the loading point to the unloading point. In this way, it will be extremely difficult for multiple shipments made with the same approval to occur.

SUMAL 2.0 also requires the uploading of photos, from various angles, of the loaded wood, for any transport in Romania, as well as the marking, in the forest, of the wooden parquet floors with GPS coordinates, before making the cut. In addition, in the new SUMAL it will be possible to see daily all the volumes of wood material in any warehouse in the country.

Minister Tánczos Barna participated, this Monday, at the headquarters of the Special Telecommunications Service (STS), in a meeting on the completion and start-up of the new system for tracking the traceability of cut wood.

“We have announced that the February 1 deadline is non-negotiable. The new SUMAL has been postponed too many times and any further postponement would cause imbalances in the forestry sector. I am optimistic that we will complete on time and have received assurances regarding this from management. By putting the new SUMAL into operation, Romania will have one of the most complex and efficient systems of this type in the world. I am convinced that, once implemented, the new SUMAL will become our main weapon in the fight against illegal deforestation, ”said Minister Barna Tánczos, quoted on the Facebook page of the Ministry of the Environment.
