An Indian who was declared dead by mistake and placed in a mortuary freezer died a few days after being rescued.

Balasubramanyam was pronounced dead by a doctor on Monday at a private hospital in Tamil Nadu, after which he was placed in a freezer. He remained there until the next day, when funeral home employees who came to lift his body for the funeral saw that he was shaking and realized he was alive, according to BBC News.

They took him back to the hospital, but he died on Friday.

Dr Balajinathan, head of the state hospital in South Salem, where he was taken the second time, told the BBC that the patient was hospitalized in serious condition and died of lung complications.

On Monday, after he was pronounced dead, his family took his body home and hired a funeral home that provided a freezer, and the funeral will be held the next day.

Company employees said that the brother of the “deceased” informed them that he had a death certificate from a doctor, but they did not see it.

Salem Police Chief Senthil Kumar said the family could not produce a medical certificate attesting to Balasubramanyam’s “first death”. A criminal case has been opened against members of the family, who are currently accused of negligence.

Mr. Balasubramanyam lived with his wife, two daughters, and a brother. Investigators did not say whether the private hospital where the initial death was reported was being investigated.
