Nicușor Dan drew attention to problems that all Bucharest people knew too well to find solutions to these problems. Sort of “Dude, it’s horrible!” And people have always said, “Yeah, that’s horrible, you’re right. That’s it.”

2020 was different. Although Nicușor Dan was no longer a member of the party he originally founded and led, although he was not a member of NLP, he fully benefited from the momentum unleashed by typical USR publicity. As before, the program for the next four years was not the strong point of the electoral campaign of the current mayor of Bucharest.

The extravagant deception of Gabriela Firea was speculated to the maximum, her expenses were speculated, again the known problems appeared.

And the astonishing moment came when someone, hard to say who, launched the ad online that USR-PLUS promised, on behalf of Nicușor Dan, hot water. Yes, that was the level of problems in the electoral campaign in Bucharest, the European capital of the late second decade of the third millennium, the 21st century.

However, this time the promise was not vague, it was launched without hesitation and without the slightest precautions. From a distance, it may seem like a sign of despair, made by a campaign team looking at the polls and, seeing that the candidate’s honor is bad, ignored nothing and went headlong into the promise market. But that is not the case.

The polls did not favor Gabriela Firea, there was enough space for better communication. Yes, the absence of hot water in the centralized system in Bucharest was a management problem at the time, which could be speculated, but certainly this was not the solution.

There is a dose of irony in the ad. But it is so tenuous that many people cannot notice it in the whirlwind of an election campaign. Many people have taken up this promise: hot water from September 28, the day after local elections.

And the hot water didn’t come instantly. It didn’t come on September 28, and in some places it didn’t come until today. In its place came the cold. And many of the people in Bucharest connected to the central heating system have found that they lack not only hot water from the apartments, but also heating.

Given that there are more than 3,400 buildings in Bucharest where there is no hot water, the promise of the campaign made by USR-PLUS on behalf of Nicușor Dan is remembered by all affected citizens, a little tight and almost muffled.

In the four years until the next round of local elections, Nicusor Dan can work wonders. It can solve the traffic problem in Bucharest, it can save historical buildings, it can rehabilitate the blocks with high seismic risk, it can make countless green spaces, and it can solve the problem of lack of parking spaces.

Unfortunately for him, he will never be able to shake off the ridiculousness of these two months (perhaps even longer) in which he could not fulfill the only concrete and tangible promise he made in the election campaign.

It is far from certain that the promise of hot water won the Bucharest City Council for Nicușor Dan, but it is the kind of lack of caution that could go a long way towards losing elections of more than four years. Because generally, the lack of caution pays off.
