In a press release, the Attorney General’s Office announces the end of the investigation on the ground and clarifies the status of the investigation and all the measures taken so far, after the fire on Saturday at the ATI for patients with Covid in the Hospital del Piatra Neamt County, fire that killed 10 patients and another seven were seriously injured.

According to the statement, five of the victims have yet to be identified and DNA tests will be conducted.

„In the case of the fire that started on November 14, 2020 at the Piatra Neam County Emergency Hospitalț, in which it was ordered to initiate the criminal investigation into the commission of the wrongful death crimes, provided for in art. 192 par. 1 and 3 of the Penal Code and culpable bodily injury, provided for in art. 196 par. 1 and 4 of the Penal Code, the criminal prosecution activities continued, namely:

1. To complete the test, in order to ensure the truth about all the circumstances of the case, the prosecutors of the Criminal and Forensic Investigation Section of the PÎCCJ asked the judge of rights and freedoms of the Court of Piatra Neamț to register the seat and annexes of the Regional Hospital. Piatra Neamț emergency.

In accordance with the order issued by the judge of rights and freedoms, on the night of November 15, 2020, under the coordination of prosecutors, the search was carried out with the necessary documents to establish the circumstances of the fire.

2. On-site investigation completed with the support of construction experts and those of the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, the National Institute of Forensic Expertise, the National Forensic Institute within the Romanian Police, the National Research and Development Institute for Mining Safety and Protection against Petroșani explosions, Române Police General Inspectorate – Neamț County Police Inspectorate and Criminal Investigation Directorate.

3. DNA experts were ordered to establish the identity of five of the deceased.

4. Forensic autopsies were performed on the victims.

5. Witness hearings were held.

In relation to the procedural acts carried out in the case, when circumstances permit, we may provide additional details. We specify that these activities cannot, in any case, violate the principle of presumption of innocence ”.
