The first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine arrived this morning at the Cantacuzino Institute. From here they will be distributed to 10 hospitals on the front lines of the fight against the pandemic. Prime Minister Florin Cîțu, Health Minister Vlad Voiculescu and DSU chief Raed Arafat are at the institute.

Update 8:00: The vaccines arrived at the Cantacuzino Institute, transported on carbonic ice, being necessary to keep them at a temperature of -80 degrees Celsius.

The 10,000 doses entered the country on Friday afternoon, via Vama Nădlac 2, around 1:40 p.m. The vaccine, developed by BioNTech and Pfizer, is the first to receive a conditional marketing authorization from the European Commission.

At the border, the transport was received by the head of the Department of Emergency Situations, Secretary of State Raed Arafat, and the head of the National Committee for the Coordination of Vaccination Activities, Dr. Valeriu Gheorghiţă. The truck with the first doses of vaccine assigned to Romania was escorted to the Capital by crews of the Traffic Police and the Gendarmerie.

Starting in 2021, the number of doses will increase. Already the second tranche of the vaccine, 150,000 doses, could arrive early next week. And in the first month of the new year, 600,000 doses of vaccine are expected in Romania.

Every week Romania will receive 150,000 doses. In a first phase, the medical personnel of the first line will be immunized, then the people of the nursing homes and the rest of the employees involved in the first line. Then, the doses will gradually reach the rest of the population.

Anti-COVID vaccination begins in Romania on December 27 at the 10 infectious disease hospitals on the front lines in the fight against COVID-19. The vaccination event at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases “Matei Balş” will begin on Sunday, December 27 at 09:00.

On the same day, similar actions will be organized in the other nine infectious disease hospitals on the front line in the fight against COVID-19, after 10:00.
