Iranian officials say the country is facing the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic. The number of new infections has risen again to more than 3,000 a day, The Guardian reports. Iran was one of the first countries affected by the virus, outside of China.

The latest figures released by the Iranian Health Department on Friday showed 144 deaths in the past 24 hours, with the number of new infections rising to 3,049. The total number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic is 23,952. Twenty-eight provinces in the country, including the capital, Tehran, are classified as red or yellow.

Specialists in Iran claim that the country’s color-coding system no longer makes sense. “We no longer have orange and yellow, the whole country is red,” said Iraj Harirchi, director of the National Center for Coronavirus Control. He warned that the death toll could reach 45,000, with complications from the next flu season.

Abbas Ali Dorsti, Vice Chancellor of Health at the University of Medical Sciences of Tabriz, explained that events in recent weeks, such as increased travel, non-compliance with protocols and the non-use of masks, have led to a marked increase in the number of infections.

More than 400,000 Iranians are officially registered to have contracted the virus. However, specialists consider that the official figures are underestimated.

The health crisis comes at a time of unprecedented pressure on the Iranian economy hit by sanctions that hit the currency and drive up the price of goods.
