The first cases of contamination with the new strain of coronavirus circulating in the United Kingdom were detected on the island of Madeira, the health authorities of the Portuguese island announced this Sunday, reports AFP, cited by Agerpres.

“The presence of the new British strain of the virus has been confirmed in Madeira,” a spokesman for the region’s regional health and civil protection service told AFP, without specifying the number of cases.

The cases concern “people who have recently arrived in Madeira from the UK,” island health officials said in a statement.

Several other countries have already announced confirmed cases of the British strain of coronavirus, such as Italy, Sweden, Spain, Japan, France, Germany, Denmark, or even Canada.

Portugal suspended the arrival of passengers from the United Kingdom until the end of the year, except for Portuguese citizens or anyone living in Portugal.

Like many countries in the European Union, Portugal began vaccination against the coronavirus on Sunday, starting with medical personnel.

The new strain, confirmed in seven more states of Europe

Spain confirmed this Saturday the first four cases of contamination with the new British version of Covid-19, the Madrid government announced. The British strain of the virus has already been detected in France, Germany, Italy, Denmark and the Netherlands.

A first case of contamination with the new strain of coronavirus circulating in the United Kingdom has also been detected in Sweden, the Swedish health authorities announced this Saturday.
