The case of the boy from Buzău is the first of its kind, requiring hospitalization in ATI, registered in Romania, since the start of the coronavirus pandemic until now. According to the information provided by epidemiological doctors, children tend to have mild forms of COVID-19 and do not require special care in medical units.
In the first phase, the child, whose parents are infected by the new coronavirus, arrived at the Emergency Reception Unit of the Buzău Regional Hospital, being suspected of meningoencephalitis. He had a very bad headache and fever, but the test result for the new coronavirus infection came back negative.
Later, after the little patient’s situation worsened, the doctors ordered his transfer to the Gomoiu Hospital in the Capital, where the COVID test was repeated. This time, the result was positive and the doctors determined that due to the SARS-CoV-2 infection, the multisystem inflammatory syndrome was a fairly rare disease.
The boy was transferred to Intensive Care, his condition is stable and he does not need breathing devices, although the infection has affected his lungs.
The case also caught the attention of Professor Alexanru Rafila, who, in a statement to Digi24, stated that the little boy deserves all the attention and compassion. However, the doctor said that, fortunately, this is one of the few cases of children who contract such a serious form of the disease.
“These are, of course, very traumatic situations for parents. It deserves all the attention and compassion, but fortunately children rarely have such complications. The same thing happens with the flu, with measles. There are situations that we cannot predict, but fortunately they are extremely rare ”, said doctor Alexandru Rafila.
He specified, however, that it is the only case of illness in a child that required hospitalization in Intensive Care, and this is very little, statistically speaking, compared to the large number of patients who need special care.
“It’s definitely something serious, but on the other hand, if you think about how many thousands of people have been in intensive care since this pandemic appeared in Romania, think that this means extremely, extremely little. You can see that we always have 500 people in ATI and only one case of serious illness in a child, ”said Dr. Alexandru Rafila.
