On Friday evening, the management of Matei Balş Hospital announced through a press release that it will support the investigation into the fire that caused five deaths. At the same time, those from the medical unit sent condolences to the families of the fire victims.

The prosecutor in the case, Alexandru Anghel, announced that investigations are underway in a wrongful death case. He explained that according to the first data, it seems that inside the Matei Balş hospital there was a fire followed by two explosions.

“We did the investigation on the spot, the four bodies were lifted, the autopsies will be done tomorrow. INSEMEX Petroşani hired specialists to clarify the circumstances of the fire. The investigation cannot be completed in one day, it was a first evaluation, tomorrow we will resume it It seems that there were two explosions of oxygen tubes, it seems that there was a fire and then there were two explosions, “explained the prosecutor in the case, Alexandru Anghel.

The prosecutor also said that the investigation will continue for at least a few days and that images from the hospital’s surveillance cameras and documents will be used.

“Today we evaluate the situation, tomorrow we will analyze the other aspects. There are surveillance cameras, the images have been uploaded and will be analyzed, there are no classrooms. The firefighters got there first, a fourth body was found during the search, I can’t explain why they found it late. I can not confirm (on the existence of an air heater no), we will clarify it tomorrow. Documents have been collected, they will be analyzed, it is a large volume. We do not exclude any option, the investigation will take at least a few days, “said the prosecutor.

Police officers say five people have been questioned so far, but more information about the investigation will be released on Saturday.

Health Minister Vlad Voiculescu declared Friday night on Digi 24 that the relatives of the Matei Balş hospital victims could not be called because their data was sealed by the police. He acknowledged that there was no procedure for this situation and announced that he would propose modifications to the regulations. Vlad Voiculescu also announces the formation of a large fund for investments in hospitals. He says that new hospitals will be built and that the project has the support of the government and the ruling coalition.

President Klaus Iohannis declared after the Matei Balş fire that “the problem is much broader” and that he is awaiting health reform from Vlad Voiculescu, the Minister of Health. The culprits will be punished, but we are dealing with structural problems in Romanian hospitals. READ HERE The chronology of the fires in Romanian hospitals.

The Matei Balş tragedy can be repeated at any time, in any hospital in Romania. At the Craiova County Emergency Hospital, for example, Oltenia’s largest hospital, a fire in the ATI wards would be a real disaster, says Dr Eleodor Cârstoiu.

Florin Cîţu also made statements on Friday. The prime minister told health system employees to either do their jobs or go home, and reactions were swift. Representatives of the Sanitas Federation posted a message on Facebook criticizing the statements made by Prime Minister Florin Cîţu after the Matei Balş incident. Trade unionists are unhappy with the fact that the prime minister speaks cynically about the income of health workers, but says nothing about the culprits of producing a new tragedy.

Indeed, dozens of people gathered on Friday evening in front of the Matei Balş Hospital, where the participants chanted various slogans addressed especially to the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, and the head of DSU, Raed Arafat. The crowd considered them the main culprits for the tragedies in Romanian hospitals.

According to information provided yesterday morning by Raed Arafat, the first call to 112 for the Matei Balş fire came at 5:05. “At 5.05 there was a call to 112, at 5.13 the first fire team arrived and at 5.15 the red plan was declared,” said Raed Arafat, in front of the Matei Balş Institute.

The burning building was built in 1953 and later modernized. The building had the necessary approvals and the most recent inspection was carried out in November, Raed Arafat said.

Bogdan Opriţă, chief physician at SMURD Bucharest, stated that there were 38 first aid teams and 6 intensive care units at the site.
