Emeric Iena, 83, former head coach of Steaua, is the man who convinced Anghel Iordănescu to return to the field, at age 36, in the final of the European Champions Cup in Seville, although the former midfielder was retired in 1984.

Ienei spoke to ProSport on “Puiu Iordănescu” on the occasion of the “General’s” birthday and he admitted that he has many memories with the man who helped him from the position of second coach, but also as a player, to win the European Champions Cup with Steaua, in 1986 .

The fabulous story of the Champions Cup final won by Steaua! “I barely persuaded him to enter the field!”

Emeric Iena agreed to talk about her good friend, who turns 70 today, May 4. “I wish Puiu a happy birthday and good health! I have many memories of him, but on the night of May 7 I will never forget her. Then he helped me win the European Champions Cup on the field. I remember he left football in ’84, and when I took him on as my second coach in Steaua, I asked him to train with the boys. I had a feeling that one day he would help me as a player. But it never occurred to me that that day could be in the final of a European Champions Cup.

Puiu kept telling me not to think about asking him to return to the field because he never would, regardless of the situation. But, near the date of the final in Seville, the boys began to realize that I would like to go to Puiu as a player because I had asked him to train even more. In addition, he had subjected him to some friendly matches.

But about two weeks before the final, the team leaders put me in a meeting and told me not to put Puiu with Barcelona in any way that our style of play is up to speed, and Puiu can’t keep up with them even if I let him play for 20-30 minutes. It seemed to them that he, although very technical, still slowed down the game. I also told Valentin Ceaușescu about this, and he told me that he has complete confidence in me.

However, my plan was to be turned upside down by Puiu Iordănescu himself, who told me that two nights before the game he did not want to participate. In the end, I convinced him to come in, he played for about 40 minutes, but he didn’t want to exceed 11 meters at the break. He made it clear to me that he didn’t want to risk missing a final like that. So, the boys Lăcătuș and Balint listened to our discussion on the field and asked me to nominate them both to execute the penalties and we will win the European Champions Cup. So it wasspecified to Jena for ProSport.
