According to the Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira, “this project will eliminate a major blockage in the Romanian transport network, which will increase road safety, shorten travel times and reduce passenger and freight costs. The project will have an extremely positive impact on the economy and the quality of life of the local population. ”

The project is expected to be operational in 2026.

The European Commission has also approved Cohesion Fund funding for a € 578.4 million project to improve Romania’s disaster response capacity.

The investment will improve Romania’s land, air and sea response capacity through the purchase of new equipment and training of personnel. Thus, the population will be better protected in emergency situations, contributing the investment to Romania’s compliance with international obligations and the national strategy on climate change and low-growth economic growth.

“Thanks to this investment of EU funds, Romania’s emergency services will be able to respond effectively to low-frequency, high-impact events, such as floods, earthquakes or nuclear accidents. This is particularly relevant for a country like Romania, which faces a high risk of natural disasters due to its topography and dense network of rivers and streams. Better preparation of Romania will also bring benefits to other countries in case of disasters abroad, in accordance with the European spirit of solidarity and agreements international ”, said the Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira.

The project will help save lives and minimize material damage and the risk of disruption to economic activities.
