The euro reaches a new all-time high against the national currency. One euro is trading at 4.8641 lei on Wednesday. The dollar is trading at 4.1529 lei on Wednesday.

The depreciation of the national currency is taking place in the context in which Parliament has adopted a 40% increase in pensions. The price has been going up since yesterday.

Finance Minister Florin Cîțu warned that the adoption of the budget rectification as amended by Parliament will lead to the depreciation of the national currency.

“The depreciation of the national currency began when (PSD, no.) Announced the motion of censure and announced that they want to return to the budget rectification. There is this risk: when this law is approved, the exchange rate would depreciate immediately and there would be this risk for Romania of having a depreciation of the exchange rate, which also means inflation, ”said Cîțu.

Last week, analyst Adrian Bența estimated that the leu will depreciate further, reaching new psychological thresholds.

“Probably somewhere between 4.87-4.88 the NBR will intervene, because 4.9 is a psychological threshold and it is difficult for the population to accept,” Bența said.
