The EU country that started the mass testing. Starting Monday, Anyone Leaving Without a Negative COVID-19 Test Can Be Fine

Slovakia is the first country in the world to conduct mass testing. It is not mandatory to take the test, but as of Monday, if you are caught on the street without a negative test result, you can be fined.

Slovaks do rapid antigen testing, which takes 30 minutes. Antigen tests do not provide reliable results, but they can identify 7 out of 10 cases of infection.

If they are positive, they are supervised by family doctors and remain isolated for ten days.

The aim of the Slovaks is to test 4 out of 5 people, as the infection curve is skyrocketing and Czech neighbors are the most affected Europeans at the moment.

The test operation is organized by the army. It is already the second weekend since queues have formed in front of the 5,000 testing centers, despite the 45,000 doctors involved.

“There is no alternative! Either severe restrictions or massive testing,” said Jaro Nad, Slovakia’s defense minister.

European leaders praise the Slovak initiative.

“We know that vaccines will not solve everything immediately. At the same time, we must make testing and monitoring more efficient,” says Charles Michel, President of the European Council.

Boris Johnson has already asked the Slovak Prime Minister to share the test results. There are specialists who say that the method would be very difficult to apply in the case of large countries, it would take a long time. But Monaco and Luxembourg are already thinking about how to fight the pandemic.
