Greek authorities have warned that Hurricane Ianos will be accompanied by strong winds and torrential rains, which could cause flooding and power outages in some regions over the next two days.
On Thursday, the Deputy Minister of Civil Protection, Nikos Hardalias, advised residents of flood-affected areas or near rivers or streams to seek temporary shelter. People in the rest of the region should limit all unnecessary travel, writes Agerpres.
“The impact of Ianos, we must be clear, will be similar to that of a strong storm, but of greater intensity, magnitude and duration,” he told reporters.
A similar storm hit Greece in 2018. In 2017, floods killed 25 people and left hundreds more homeless. These storms are known as “medicines”, a term derived from juxtaposing the English words “Mediterranean” and “hurricane”.
Ianos is about to hit in two stages. Seven regions in western Greece have already been put on high alert before the storm hits, and authorities will decide in the second half on Thursday whether regions like Athens, Attica and Corinth will be included in the warning.

The strong winds and floods caused by it have already raised alarm among those living on the west coast of Greece.
On Saturday, the “European hurricane” will cross the Aegean Sea towards the south, towards Crete and wind speeds of over 100 km / h are expected, reaching even 120 km / h.
The hurricane will also be accompanied by heavy rains, followed by devastating floods, according to the latest estimates by meteorologists.
