The Czech government bans packaged coffee amid the COVID-19 pandemic. What is the explanation of the authorities

Coffee lovers in the Czech Republic could go through a difficult period, after the Prague government banned packaged coffee, in the desire to combat the coronavirus pandemic, reports DPA.

The government’s decision prompted Czech citizens to express their discontent in comments posted on news portals. “It’s a joke,” complained one Internet user. “I don’t have time to sit for coffee in the morning, before work,” wrote another user. Others responded in a more ironic way, with one commenter saying “this will definitely save us from the pandemic.”

The decision to ban packaged coffee was approved by the Czech government on Thursday, but due to unclear wording, some thought it was simply a mistake. Czech Trade and Industry Minister Karel Havlicek has added to the confusion after saying that, in his opinion, packaged coffee will only be allowed if consumers bring their glass of coffee “home, in a bag”.

Health Minister Jan Blatny cleared up the doubts during a debate that took place on Friday night.

“This is not a mistake: the objective is that we no longer walk through the Christmas markets or through the streets with cups of coffee or food in hand,” said the Minister of Health.
