Nicolae Robu

Timisoara’s incumbent mayor Nicolae Robu, former mayor Gheorghe Ciuhandu and other former officials were sued in the case of illegal home sales under Law 112/1995.

The Timişoara Court of Appeal ruled this Thursday, after two postponements, on the appeal filed by the defendants in the retrocession file of the Timişoara City Council, in the preliminary chamber procedure after the Timiş Court rejected the exceptions invoked by the defense.

Thus, Nicolae Robu, who lost the elections of September 27, but also the former mayor, Gheorghe Ciuhandu, were sent to court.

Nicolae Robu, accused of abuse of power

In December 2019, DNA closed the case in one of the most controversial corruption scandals in Timisoara: the sale of nationalized houses at ridiculous prices.

Nicolae Robu and Gheorghe Ciuhandu, the current and former mayor of Timisoara, will be tried for abuse of power. There are only 2 of the 9 defendants sent to court by DNA prosecutors because together with senior municipal officials – vice mayor, secretary general or lawyers – they have illegally sold nationalized houses at ridiculous prices to some tenants or alleged tenants. The hole in the budget amounts to several million euros.
