With more than 11 years in prison and incarcerated in the Gherla Penitentiary, Carmen Şatran (Bejan at the time of the crime) obtained the modification of the detention regime from semi-open to open. According to the law, open regime detainees can work, inside and outside the prison, without supervision, having the obligation to return to the place of accommodation once the program has finished.

Basically, with the transition to open mode, Carmen Şatran can go out every day, unsupervised, to go to work for eight hours. In such a situation, the detainee must follow a well-established path and follow a set of rules.

If they remain in the penitentiary, the detainees who are serving a sentence in the open will be able to keep their rooms open both day and night, having free access to the places and areas established by the penitentiary administration.

How Carmen Şatran was approved in the open regime

Upon being convicted of murder, Carmen Şatran was first incarcerated at maximum security. Later it was switched to closed mode and then to semi-open mode. Upon arriving at the Gherla Penitentiary, the former medical student obtained from the delegate judge the decision to change the detention regime from semi-open to open.

The Commission for the individualization of the regime for the execution of sentences within the Gherla Penitentiary did not agree with the decision of the delegate judge, challenging in court the decision to modify the detention regime. However, the Gherla court confirmed the decision by which Carmen Şatran was transferred from the semi-open regime to the open regime, finding that during her detention Carmen Şatran was a model detainee, being awarded 53 times without ever being sanctioned.

According to the aforementioned document, the detainee was involved in various re-education programs and worked for 374 days. Currently, the former student works in the vegetable greenhouses of the Gherla penitentiary. “The detainee showed a constant interest in carrying out educational and lucrative activities and had an appropriate behavior, it is enough to consider that she made serious efforts for her reintegration into society”, is shown in the decision by which Carmen Şatran’s detention regime was changed from semi-open to open.

Sources from the prison administration said that the next step after obtaining the modification of the detention regime is parole, with the former student having the possibility of entering a maximum of one year in the parole commission.

The crime movie that terrorized Romania

Before the murder in room 50 of the Medicine house, it was the love story between Carmen Bejan and Raúl Florea. The 2009 summer holidays found Sergiu Florea (originally from Hunedoara county) and Carmen Bejan (from Ineu, Arad county), in Timisoara for the late session. Loved at that time, Sergiu Florea and Carmen Bejan, both in their first year, rented a bedroom to live in arrears. In order to get money to pay for her exams, the two decided that the girl should “sell herself” to a wealthy gypsy from Timişoara, known for his passion for women. Thus, Trifu Schroth was lured into the bedroom, where he was to have sex for a fee with Carmen Bejan.

Probably due to some misunderstandings about money, there were misunderstandings between Carmen Bejan and Trifu Schroth, who were alone in the bedroom. Sergiu Florea also intervened in the altercation, and the two beat and stabbed the man. The young men took the body, put it in a closet and went to a supermarket on the outskirts of the city to buy plastic bags and a suitcase to store the body, which they later cut up. All the horror happened in the bedroom. The youth’s plan was to put the victim’s body in their own car and set it on fire.

At around 4:00 a.m., they left the bedroom with the suitcase containing the victim’s amputated body. The traces of blood that remained in the hallway raised the suspicion of the doorman, who notified the police and the murder was discovered. With the Police on the way, Carmen Bejan wandered through the parks and the next day she surrendered. Sergiu Florea took refuge in an apartment in Calea Şagului. When the police entered the house, the young man took refuge in the bathroom, where he tried to commit suicide by cutting the veins in his hands. However, the ambulance doctors who arrived at the scene saved the young man’s life.

At the trial, the young men tried to blame each other. In the book “Camino al Abismo”, published from prison, Sergiu Florea recounted how “Karla” stabbed the victim: “I was lying down, thinking about the possible decisions I could make. Then strange sounds were heard, so I opened my eyes. The image must have caught my attention, because now the person nailed to the floor after the blows received was very different from how He had left her. It seems the ‘innocent’ girl, Karla, had had a moment of mental breakdown and had stabbed the man several times.. The final sentence in this case was handed down by the Supreme Court on June 8, 2011. Subsequently, with the entry into force of the new Penal Code, the sentence of the students was reduced by four months, resulting in a final sentence of 19 years and eight months in prison.
