The COVID vaccine could arrive in Romania in December. Where it will be stored

The first doses of the vaccine COVID-19 could reach Romania in late December, said Dr. Valeriu Gheorghiţă, coordinator of the national vaccination campaign. He explained to Digi24 where the vaccines will be stored, especially those that need special conditions, and how the actual vaccination is done.

“In the happiest case, we hope that after the second half of December, towards the end of the month, the first doses of vaccines will come from at least one manufacturing company. In the pessimistic scenario, we will probably talk about January, February, “said Gheorghiță.

He added that there were at least 2.4 million doses of the vaccine and the same amount from Pfizer, enough to vaccinate medical personnel and begin vaccinating vulnerable groups and key employees.

The vaccine is given in two doses every few weeks.

Gheorghiță said that Romania has already prepared the necessary for the transport and storage of the vaccine, which requires special conditions.

“At the moment we have everything we need. The main storage center in Romania will be the Cantacuzino Institute. There will be 6 more regional centers, in 6 military hospitals that will be equipped – and there is the equipment I am talking about – with these freezers of less 80 degrees that have the capacity to store a large number of doses. All this exists, you just have to distribute them to the regional centers. The producer of this vaccine ensures distribution down to the level of these regional centers, “said Gheorghiță.

In the case of other vaccines that do not require these special freezers, the manufacturer will transport them to a central warehouse.

Gheorghiță also said that vaccination will be done on an appointment basis, as vaccines last only 4-5 days after being taken out of special freezers, so as few doses as possible are wasted. There will be a centralized registry of appointments.

Vaccination centers will be organized at the hospital level, for medical staff, and fixed and mobile vaccination centers will be set up to reach rural areas and people with disabilities, Gheorghiță said.

Regarding personnel involved in the vaccination campaign, the doctor says there will triage personnel, medical personnel who make the vaccine and people who make records in the system. There will also be staff to ensure the protection of the vaccination teams. These are, says Gheorghiță, employees of the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of the Interior.

He also said that there will be an information campaign on the vaccine.

“There will be a platform where everyone can find the most important information about vaccination and types of vaccines. In addition to this platform, there will be a number of communicators, who are experts in the medical field, professional associations, including patient associations, which will be joined by experts from other fields and opinion leaders from other fields: cultural, artistic. , as long as they want to be part of this informative activity ”, he said.
