All the inhabitants of the Greek island of Kastellorizo have been vaccinated and people say they cannot wait for the tourists to return. There are currently no cases of coronavirus on the small island.
Since March 2020, only one case of coronavirus has been detected on the island, the infected person being isolated, so the virus has not spread to the community.
The locals are careful to follow all the imposed rules, but they live more relaxed considering that the island is free of coronavirus. Currently, anyone arriving on the island must take a quick test.
Maria Lazaraki was one of the first to be vaccinated. Her family’s restaurant is closed, but the 90-year-old loves cooking for her grandchildren.
“They vaccinated me. The entire population was vaccinated, there are people between 20 and 94 years old. Of course I am old, I lived my life, but fortunately the virus does not reach our island. Before the pandemic, we had a lot of tourists. We hope they come back, “he said, quoted by Euronews.
For fisherman Michalis Matsos, the pandemic caused significant economic losses. However, he expects the situation to improve in the coming months.
“Tourists no longer come, we no longer have anyone to sell the fish to. Any catch has no value. We hope that people will come in the summer to buy the fish we catch,” he said.
In anticipation of the summer season, Kastellorizo supports the Greek government’s proposal to issue a vaccination certificate.
“The vaccination has helped us psychologically, we feel much better. All the time before the vaccination we felt fear and insecurity. We could not cope with a large number of COVID-19 cases. I think things are going to improve. We are about to In favor of the vaccination certificate, many of our neighbors have obtained it. For areas like Kastellorizo, it is important to know that the incoming tourist has been vaccinated, “said the island’s deputy mayor, Stratos Amigdalos.
