The Chinese fear COVID-19’s return across the border with North Korea. A possible outbreak would quickly destabilize the Pyongyang regime

Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed concern over the possible coronavirus threat in North Korea and offered to help the country prevent an outbreak at its borders, reports the BBC.

Xi Jinping responded to a message from North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un. The Beijing state press writes that Kim congratulated the Chinese leader on the apparent success against the pandemic. In response, Xi offered to send aid to fight COVID-19.

North Korea goes on to say that no confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been reported within its borders, although analysts are reluctant to such a possibility. North Korea was the first country to suspend tourist travel and completely close its borders in response to the epidemic in mid-January.

North Korea’s fragile health system could be quickly overwhelmed by even a small COVID-19 outbreak.

Kim Jong-un disappeared from the public for almost three weeks, during which time the tabloid western press repeatedly wrote that he was seriously ill or even dead. He reappeared on May 2, apparently in good health.
