UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen did not reach a compromise on the post-Brexit trade deal or the face-to-face meeting in Brussels and will extend the negotiations until Sunday, CNN reports. .
After a face-to-face negotiation that lasted several hours in the European capital, both parties managed to agree on one thing: to extend the talks until Sunday.
The UK and the European Union are still a long way from a trade deal, as the December 31 deadline approaches, and from 2021, the UK will leave the single market entirely with or without a trade deal.
The latest effort began in the middle of last month, when the Europeans’ top negotiator traveled to London in a last-ditch effort to find a compromise solution. The talks stalled again, so Boris Johnson decided to go to Brussels to speak directly with Ursula von der Leyen.
“We had an interesting and lively discussion about the main points on our lists. We gained a clearer understanding of each other’s positions. They are still far from each other.”
