In a town of Olt 70 silver coins from the 2nd century BC were discovered. C. The coins are part of a limited edition, issued by the province of Macedonia Prima.
A treasure hunter with a metal detector discovered 70 silver coins bearing the insignia of the province of First Macedonia. Paul Durcă was a police officer for 20 years at LEI Olt. He is now retired and has been searching for archaeological remains in his hometown since January. This is how he found the coins from two thousand years ago near his parents’ house.
„At first I did not know what they were because the signal that the detector gave, I usually find doses of beer. (…) I dug. They began to appear. I got excited, at one point, around 20 and something I stopped and called, I called the authorities“Says Paul Durcă.
The coins will be valued by an expert and the seeker could receive up to 45% of the value of the treasure.
These coins have also been discovered in the Balkans and in the Transylvania area, says Denissa Guţică-Florescu, museologist at the Olt County Museum.
The coins discovered in the Radomireşti commune of Olt could be proof of a commercial exchange.
“As we know, they were broadcast in a limited period, in a period between 158-150 BC approximately. They look like shows from different years because we see the face of the goddess Artemis on the obverse”says Denissa Guţică- Florescu.
On the black market, a single coin of this type is worth between 180-320 euros. Those looking for metals are not approved in the cultural world. Specialists admit, however, that archaeological remains are more likely to be discovered.
In Olt County, 40 people are authorized to carry out these activities. Not at archaeological sites.
Gheorghe Smarandache, Director of the Olt County Museum, states: “In general, the construction works are not that expensive. Instead, it is about the work team, of specialists. It is then about making some notebooks and some reports, some work reports of the archaeologists, which are quite expensive. ”..
„The detector will be awarded by the local authority subordinate to the museum that guards the coins. Authors of accidental discoveries are entitled to a monetary reward of 30% of the property’s value. And, in the case of an exceptional discovery, another 15% “, says Denissa Guţică-Florescu, museographer.
