Former Gloria Buzău player and coach Viorel Ion (52 years old) was elected deputy mayor of ALDE Buzău, announces digisport.ro.

On April 29, the former striker received 16 votes “in favor” at the Buzau Local Council meeting. “My first thought after a day as important as today is to continue doing what I know best, performance! I feel honored and indebted at the same time for my election as Deputy Mayor of Buzau.”

As an athlete, I carried the name of Buzău as high as I could, as a man I put my whole soul into the people of Buzău, and as a resident of this city I was, am, and always will be proud of my origin.

As a team member, along with Mayor Constantin Toma and Deputy Mayor Ionuț Apostu, I want to have as many achievements as possible for the good of all the people of Buzau. I thank my colleagues at ALDE Buzău for their trust and for proposing that I occupy this important position. We are all happy that the PSD-ALDE 2016 protocol is being respected again and together we can put ourselves at the service of citizens, “wrote Viorel Ion on her Facebook page.

Before becoming deputy mayor, Viorel Ion was a local ALDE councilor. During 2004-2008, he was also a local councilor of the Town Hall, and in 2012 he ran for a position as a deputy of the Romanian Ecological Party.

The former coach even tried to become mayor, after running in the 2016 election, when he was expelled from football after a monstrous scandal. At that time, Viorel Ion ran for Buzau mayor of the Romanian Social Party, founded by Mircea Geoana.

Viorel Ion can get more involved now in the life of the local team, where he made a career as a player and as a coach.

Now SCM Gloria Buzău, who is eighth in League 2, has no right to be promoted to the first echelon because she is funded by local authorities.

After 24 stages, SCM Gloria, trained by Ilie Stan, is in eighth place in League 2.

In 2016, Viorel Ion was forced to leave football after a major scandal. Even before the mayoral election in 2016, Viorel Ion, who was Gloria Buzău’s coach, received a two-year suspension and a fine of 200,000 lei for organized matches for sports betting.

The file analyzed by FRF included matches from July 2014 to May 2015, which were allegedly organized by the club administration to win the bets. The same seconds were received by Ion, Romică Bunică and Marian Roșu, and 14 players were prohibited from playing during different periods.

Even if Viorel Ion questioned FRF’s decision, it did not win the case. As a result, the team filed for bankruptcy and dissolved just before the promotion play-off, with Olimpia Satu Mare.
